Martina is a dentist trained in Uganda and holds a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics as well as a Master’s degree in Public Health. Since 2023, she has been a doctoral student at Sophiahemmet University.
In her doctoral role, Martina combines research with teaching responsibilities within the Bachelor’s Programme in Nursing. With more than 15 years of professional experience in dentistry, she has worked in both private and public healthcare settings across low- and high-income countries. Her advanced studies in epidemiology and public health have contributed to a broader understanding of health and disease beyond clinical manifestations and provide an important foundation for her ongoing research.
Her research interests include student health, psychological distress, musculoskeletal health, comorbidity, and epidemiological methods. Having trained and worked across diverse healthcare systems, Martina brings an international perspective to both research and education.
Martina’s doctoral project is based on the Sustainable University Life (SUN) cohort of 4,262 university students. Her research focuses on the coexistence of function-limiting musculoskeletal problems and psychological distress. The overall aim is to increase knowledge of modifiable risk factors and to examine how these conditions interact. Ultimately, the research seeks to support the development of effective health promotion and preventive strategies to improve student health.
