Maria Wahlström

Maria Wahlström

Maria Wahlström is a senior lecturer at Sophiahemmet University and has the assignment as programme director for specialist nurse in cardiac care.
Her research is focused on yoga, atrial fibrillation and self-care. The research includes interventions that evaluate health-related quality of life, vital signs and digital tools.
Maria has been a registered nurse since 1985 and defended her PhD in medical science at Karolinska Institutet in 2019 with the thesis “Effects of yoga in people with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation”.

The ongoing research is conducted in an international, interdisciplinary environment involving researchers and doctoral students.
The goal of Maria’s research is to improve for people heart disease and to conduct evidence-based research in yoga.

Ongoing projects

Effects of a Digital Yoga Program in People with Symptomatic Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation. An international study in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.
The overall aim is to evaluate whether a digital yoga program can improve health-related quality of life and lower blood pressure and heart rate in people with symptomatic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

The effect of MediYoga on sleep-quality, blood pressure and quality of life among older people with hypertension.
The overall aim of this project is to evaluate a digital intervention with yoga to evaluate sleep quality, blood pressure, and quality of life in older people with hypertension
Role: Co-supervisor to Katrine Vollbrecht Amdi, PhD student, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.
