Paula is a registered nurse in both Spain and Sweden and holds a Master’s degree in Global Health. She has worked in a variety of healthcare settings and has also volunteered in refugee camps in Spain and Greece. Before beginning her doctoral studies at Sophiahemmet University, she worked as a research nurse.
Paula’s primary interest is person-centred care, with a strong commitment to seeing the individual beyond their disease, age, sex, or cultural background. She is passionate about promoting equitable and dignified healthcare that respects and prioritizes each person’s preferences, values, and goals.
Paula’s doctoral research is situated within the field of health care science and is based on the PROCEED (PROstate Cancer – Experiences and Expectations During treatment) project, a longitudinal cohort study. Her research focuses on how people with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) experience their symptoms, quality of life, and treatment decision-making over time when receiving life-prolonging treatments. The research also explores the role of significant others in treatment decisions.
Recent advances in treatment have improved survival for people with mCRPC, meaning that more individuals are living longer with an incurable disease. However, there is still a need for research that follows patients’ experiences throughout the disease trajectory. The overall aim of Paula’s research is to increase understanding of the experiences of symptoms and treatment decisions of patients and their significant others, thereby contributing to more person-centred care and better-informed clinical decision-making.
