Mattias Eckerman

Mattias Eckerman is a licensed physiotherapist with clinical experience in primary care since 2012. He has a strong interest in sports medicine and, throughout his career, has worked with patients and athletes experiencing musculoskeletal problems. His research focuses on knee injuries among young handball players, with particular emphasis on identifying risk factors and prognostic factors for sustaining serious injuries.

The aim of his research is to improve the understanding of why certain players suffer knee injuries and what the consequences of these injuries may be. By deepening this understanding, Mattias seeks to contribute to helping athletes remain injury-free, return to their sport safely and sustainably, and enable young people to continue focusing on their athletic development.

Current Projects

The doctoral project is part of a larger study involving handball players attending handball-focused upper secondary schools in Sweden (the Swedish Handball Cohort). The study is a collaboration between Sophiahemmet University and the Swedish Handball Federation.
