Master of Science in Nursing- Palliative Care, 60 HE credits (campus-based programme)


Programme description
Palliative care services need trained and well educated nurses for safe and competent care. In this programme, you have the opportunity to further your knowledge and skills based on a person-centered approach in palliative care. In order to provide evidence-based, supportive care in all phases of a life-threatening illness trajectory, a competent nurse needs extensive knowledge of nursing and medical science paired with ability to implement theoretical knowledge in clinical practice. Ability to participate in quality assurance and improvement projects and to apply current research evidence in practice are key competencies for safe health care delivery. Inter professional teamwork and communication skills are other relevant competencies.

The programme contains seven courses.

  • Complex symptom management, 7.5 HE
  • Caring for families, 7.5 HE
  • Interprofessional teamwork and communication, 7.5 HE
  • Philosophy of science and research methodology, 7.5 HE
  • Independent degree project, 15 HE
  • Development, quality assurance and patient safety in palliative care services, 7.5 HE

All courses can be taken separately.

Degree specification
A Master’s Degree in Nursing Science – Palliative care is issued after the student has completed course requirements comprising 60 HE credits, including an independent Master Thesis in Nursing Science – Palliative care, which covers a minimum of 15 HE credits. In accordance with the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, 60 HE credits correspond to full-time studies for a period of 40 weeks.

Teaching approach
The educational methods and approach emphasize student focus as well as active student participation, where the student is expected to assume responsibility for learning by seeking and evaluating knowledge, individually or in a group, depending on current, relevant challenges and realistic caring situations. The programme offers lectures and workshops for high level academic discussions. The programme, course objectives and grading criteria specify what the student is expected to learn as well as provide focus for course content, methods and learning activities.

To ensure high quality, research proximity and clinical relevance, attention is paid to include a diverse group of lecturers with special palliative care competence, researchers as well as clinically active health professionals.

The programme offers scheduled teaching and learning activities on campus. The online platform for education, Sophia International Nurse Online (SINO), is utilized for all programme and course information, submitting assignments, contacting lecturers and course leaders. Our anti-plagiarism programme, Urkund, is routinely used to screen assignments. The programme contains clinical experiences and field studies to promote transitions from theoretical knowledge to practice. The involved palliative care services are specialists within the field.

Educational design
Campus-based studies are organized with lectures, seminars and other teacher-led activities Monday-Friday (approximately 16-20 teacher-led hours per week). The pedagogic methods are based on a student-activating approach, where the students are the leading characters and take responsibility for their own learning.

The grades are awarded in agreement with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). It is a standard for comparing study performance across the European Union and collaborating European countries.

A seven-step grading criteria is used. The grades awarded range from A-F. Grades A-E are passing grades. Fx and F are failing grades.  Grades: A – excellent, B – very good, C – good, D – satisfactory, E – adequate, Fx – inadequate, new examination required and F - failed.

Entry requirements

  • Registered nurse or equivalent
  • Bachelor‘s degree comprising 180 higher education (HE) credits in nursing science or other relevant area
  • English language proficiency. Passed TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent internationally recognized test (for detailed requirements, see below), or
  • Three years of English studies at the level of upper secondary school (post-16, in Sweden called English B) with a documented passing grade
  • The following English language tests are accepted:
  • TOEFL: with a minimum score of 550 with at least 4,0 in Written test (TWE)" (paper based), 213 with at least 4,0 in Essay Rating" (computer-based) or 79 with at least 17 in Written test (TWE)"(Internet-based)
  • IELTS: with an overall band score of 6.0 and no part under 5.0
  • Cambridge/Oxford (Advanced or Proficiency)
  • University of Michigan ECPE (Examination for the certificate of Proficiency in English


Students from outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are required to pay a tuition fee. The fee covers the tuiton and is not related the general cost of living.
